Thanksgiving is here! It’s time for Feasting – with copious amounts of food, spread out on tables shared with our closest friends and family.
No matter how trying the times, or the varied circumstances we may find ourselves in this year, Thanksgiving is that unique time in which we make a concerted effort for Gratitude.
We count our blessings.
Thanksgiving is the built-in “Pause” button in an otherwise hectic year.
You need it, and so does your law firm.
This is your time for grateful reflection.
Feast on all the things you and your law firm have accomplished this year! This isn’t just a feel-good, touchy-feely exercise. It’s actually a wise way for law firm owners to prepare for 2024.
We’re in last quarter of 2023 – As a law firm owner, you are probably in the midst of your firm’s Year End Planning – and starting to think about the Big Goals you want to set for your firm in 2024.
Reflecting back on the past year’s endeavors can bring on frustration, when you identity the goals you weren’t able to meet in 2023, or the Strategies you intended to put in place, but failed to implement.
For most of us high-achievers, it’s easy to become frustrated, focusing on what we haven’t yet accomplished. But it’s important to take a step back and examine what we have accomplished this past year and in all our time on earth.
The truth is that each of you have accomplished much already in your lifetime. Many of you have built a successful law firm from the ground up, and that, in and of itself, is no small accomplishment! Be proud of that achievement!
And successful law firms are never built on the backs of the law firm owner alone, so give thanks now for all that your team has done to help you and your firm get to where you are today.
Before setting your sites on your firms BIG 2024 GOALS, take time now to reflect with positivity and gratefulness on all you have accomplished, both personally and professionally, and all your team has accomplished as well.
Taking inventory not only gives you a grateful mindset; It also gives you the confidence you need to move forward in 2024.
A confident and optimistic mindset is essential to accomplishing great things-things that will give you the personal satisfaction and happiness you are striving for as well as greater profits and law firm growth.
Carefully evaluating what did and didn’t work for your law firm this year is essential for gaining clarity on what you want to stop doing in 2024 and what you want to do more of in the coming year. Just don’t allow yourself to dwell on what you haven’t yet accomplished without recognizing, too, how far you’ve come and all that you’ve already done well.
You need a mindset of confidence that is energized with optimism to propel you and your firm forward in 2024.
Take some time today to “look back” before you “look forward” and start creating new goals and a new vision for you and your law practice for 2024.
Take an achievement inventory of the accomplishments you have made over time and pat yourself on the back. Start with your most recent achievements and work backwards over the last 10-20 years, listing out all that you have accomplished.
This may feel counterintuitive, since we all tend to focus on what we don’t have, and what we haven’t yet accomplished. But that negative self-assessment can be demoralizing and even hold you back from creating the positive and winning mindset you need for future success.
Thanksgiving season is a perfect time for this form of positive reflection. While no one likes someone who is constantly “tooting their own horn,” there is a time and place for recognizing your strengths and accomplishments, and doing so is not vanity. Instead, it is an important act of appreciation. So, take time now for this much needed self-assessment and then give thanks for all you and your team have accomplished and take that spirit of positivity with you into 2024. Let it propel you forward to even greater accomplishments in the future.
